The Berlioz Requiem
photo reminds
me of what Adelaide Festivals were like in their early years. Exciting,
and with programming that was truly daring, innovative and eventful.
The Berlioz "Requiem", with massively augmented choir, soloists,
orchestra, brass bands and 14 timpani, plus a lot of other Berliozian
additions, was a BIG event which John Hopkins conducted. I
had forgotten, until I saw the photo, that he
brought me up to take a call or two at the end of a performance having been
Chief Chorus Master. Those days were
exciting in their daring and innovative programming for which John Hopkins and
others deserve great praise.
