The Schools Concert in Alice Springs photo was in 1967 (during the first visit by a State Orchestra to the Northern Territory).    We flew from Adelaide to Darwin overnight, for concerts there, plus later on the way back, in Alice Springs.   (Henry Krips did the evening concerts and I did the schools performances).

In the picture you enclosed I actually am narrating Prokofiev's "Peter and the Wolf", and doing the conducting as well!  This was understandably pretty rare, as there are several places where the two have to coincide and, back then, Leonard Bernstein was the only other conductor who to my knowledge, was widely credited for combining both roles simultaneously.  Still, nothing ventured, nothing gained;  and we did the 4 or more Prokofiev performances successfully.  Naturally, the SASO was "helpful" at the critical moments and things held together satisfactorily, but, as you can imagine, it still took some careful co-ordination from the podium!!

Further more, that pic reminded me that there was a public bar at the RSL Club in Alice Springs, where we were performing that very concert.   As it happened, the PA system was a bit too loud, so that when I delivered the warning line (to the duck, I think)  " 'Look out', said Peter" (with an appropriate degree of drama in my voice), some poor old sod in the bar dropped his beer glass in fright, and uttered a couple of expletives, which could be heard around the hall.  It was quite hilarious and greatly enjoyed by the kids in the audience and the players on stage.
