Ring dem bells!
In the early 80s
one of the performances in Elder Park had a particularly spectacular rendition
of the 1812 Overture. For the cannon sounds, the Army got involved and on cue,
over the road at the parade ground, they fired off their artillery to
magnificent effect!. This was only out done by the
bells of St Peter’s Cathedral. It was organised that at the right moment, the
orchestral assistant would tell the bell ringers to start over a walkie talkie.
However, no one realised that when the orchestral assistant screamed out to
stop, none of the bell ringers would be able to hear the signal. So on and on
they rang, even as the musicians and audience were getting into our cars for
the journey home!
