An attempt was made in August 1879 to
establish a permanent orchestra with the formation of the Adelaide Orchestral
Society. The orchestra consisted of amateurs and paid professionals, and
gave a concert on May 27th, 1880. The
finances could not support any further concerts and the society ceased to exist.
