Adelaide Festival 1960 – an orchestral extravaganza!

 

The first ever arts festival in Australia was in Adelaide 1960. It proved to be a real festival of orchestras if the Souvenir Program is anything to go by. It opened with a combined concert in Elder Park with the SASO and the SSO. This was followed two days later by the performance by the SASO. Then the SSO played a staggering four different concerts in four days! The AYO played a couple of concerts at the Town Hall. The SASO then played for two different operas, Rigoletto (photo) & Trittico while the VSO after warming up by playing the opera Salome, then played two other orchestral concerts
