ORCHESTRA CHANGES NAME

The ABC General Manager (Mr T S Duckmanton CBE) tonight announced that the SA Symphony Orchestra would in future be known as the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.

Mr Duckmanton said that the ABC had adopted the change of name after consultation with the State Government of South Australia, the Adelaide City Council, members of the orchestra and other interest parties.

“The change will help the orchestra to be identified even more closely with Adelaide which, as the home of the Adelaide Festival of Arts, is fast becoming an internationally recognised centre of culture”, said Mr Duckmanton.

“For the 1975 subscription series, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will be under the direction of the renowned Israeli, Elyakum Shapirra”.

Recent increases in the staffing of the orchestra will augment its on-stage strength to 75 players.
